Dear SWCA Attendees,

We are so excited to see you at the annual conference later this week! We wanted to share the official program document with you to help you finalize your travel and conference plans. Some presentation scheduling may have changed since the first time you viewed the schedule, so be sure to review your presentation details.

As you review the schedule of exciting events and presentations and make plans to connect with colleagues, please be certain to reserve time in your conference schedule to attend our featured sessions:

-Dr. Laura Emiko Soltis, Executive Director of Freedom University, will be joined by current Freedom University students and staff during the Plenary Lunch on Thursday from 11AM-12:30PM.

-Dr. Michelle Bachelor Robinson, Writing Center Director and Director of the Comprehensive Writing Program at Spelman College, will deliver the keynote address during the Awards Ceremony and Keynote Address on Friday from 11AM-12:45PM.

Dear SWCA Members,

We are looking forward to seeing you at the annual conference Decatur, GA, hosted by Emory University, in just a few short weeks! We wanted to share information that will help you plan your conference weekend.

First, we are thrilled to announce several special events:

Dr. Emiko Soltis (Executive Director of Freedom University) will lead a plenary panel on “Writing Across Borders: Disrupting Segregation of Undocumented Youth in Higher Education" on Thursday, February 22 at 11AM.
Beth Michel and Dr. Malinda Lowery (leaders of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative at Emory University) will lead a special session on “Developing an Actionable Land Acknowledgment” on Thursday, February 22 at 1PM.
Dr. Michelle Bachelor Robinson (Writing Center Director & Comprehensive Writing Program Director, Spelman College) will deliver the keynote address, “Writing Outside the Center: Engaging Community, Facilitating Change,” during a luncheon event on Friday, February 23 at 11am.
The keynote address will be followed by the SWCA Awards Ceremony on Friday, February 23.

Second, we want to let you know that the schedule of presentations is now available for review at this page and, soon, on the SWCA website. We invite you to proofread the document for typos in your name or session title (try searching the document for your name). If you find an error, please feel free to use the comment function in that document and we will make the correction. If you have additional questions about the schedule, contact us at swcaconference@gmail.com. If you were contacted previously with a question about your presentation format, please consult this document to confirm any changes to that format.

We will reach out again soon with additional information about exciting local highlights and with suggestions about how to make your presentation as accessible as possible for all conference attendees. If you have accessibility concerns or questions or would like to request accommodations, we invite you to reach out to the conference co-chairs at swcaconference@gmail.com as soon as possible so that we have time to make any necessary arrangements.

We encourage you to visit the SWCA website to register for the conference and for more information about travel to the Atlanta/Decatur area. If you plan to stay at the conference hotel, we also urge you to make your hotel reservation as soon as possible, as the hotel is nearly sold out for the weekend of the conference.

SWCA Statement on the Death of Tyre Nichols

February 1, 2023

Dear Members,

As we prepare to hold our conference in Memphis next week, the Southeastern Writing Center Association acknowledges the tragic death of Tyre Nichols and the tremendous grief his family, friends, and community are experiencing. SWCA is committed to furthering discussions that advance a mission of social and racial justice, and we stand with those negatively affected by oppression and brutality.

Much of the work of writing centers is holistic, focusing on empowering writers to amplify and share their voices, and it is important that we support this not just in our academic spaces, but everywhere, in all aspects of life. When SWCA convenes, we will do so with the heaviness of Tyre Nichols's death weighing on our hearts. The senseless, violent, premature end to his life reminds us of our responsibility to the community. Thus, through peaceful discourse, we will continue working to sow the seeds of inclusion and respect for all voices, especially the voices of people of color.

Nominations and self-nominations are welcome for all award categories: Undergraduate Tutor, Graduate Tutor, Professional Tutor, and SWCA Achievement Awards.

After much deliberation, the Southeastern Writing Center Association has decided to move the February 10-12, 2022 conference to a virtual format. The in-person conference hosted by Christian Brothers University Writing and Communications Corner will take place in 2023. The 2022 virtual SWCA conference will be sponsored by SWCA and hosted by Nova Southeastern University's Writing and Communication Center.

Please see the updated conference CFP and note the extended deadline for proposal submissions is November 20, 2021. We hope that the move to a virtual conference will allow for a wide range of participation.

Now Accepting Nominations for SWCA-CARE Co-Chair

The Southeastern Writing Center Association’s “Center Acknowledgment and Recognition of Excellence” (C.A.R.E.) program was developed by the SWCA Research & Development (R&D) Committee as part of its focus on using institutional and organizational research to provide enhanced resources and opportunities for members of the writing center community.

The SWCA invites centers to apply for certification to be recognized for the value they bring to their consultants, clients, and institutions. Certification applications are welcomed on a rolling basis and reviewed tri-annually.

The C.A.R.E. Writing Center Certification program invites nominations for the position of SWCA-CARE Co-Chair (January 2022-January 2024).

The SWCA-CARE Co-Chair coordinates the long-term vision of SWCA-CARE program, encourages submissions, fields questions, manages the application review process as well as tools and resources used in the review process, and organizes/oversees the committee of reviewers that is approved by the current SWCA President. Other duties might include professional development and SWCA-CARE promotion. The Co-Chair position is a two-year commitment. In the first year, the candidate serves as Co-Chair. In the second year, the Co-Chair becomes Chair and helps train the incoming Co-Chair.

Interested candidates should send their CV/Resume and 500-word statement of interest to Dr. Candis Bond: CBOND@augusta.edu and/or Dr. Joy Bracewell: joy.bracewell@gcsu.edu by October 15, 2021. In the statement of interest, please include a rationale for your interest, your qualifications, and your vision for how you might maintain or improve the program.

Dear SWCA Members,

We hope you’re all doing well and enjoyed the great online conference this year on Trauma and Transformation. I’m writing to share with you one of the many ways SWCA continues its support of the outstanding writing center work taking place throughout our region and beyond—SWCA CARE.

The SWCA-CARE program (Center Acknowledgment & Recognition of Excellence) offers access to writing center planning materials, rubrics, research, and resources related to continued enhancement of your centers, including SWCA certification. You’ll find information on SWCA-CARE on the website.

The SWCA-CARE co-chairs provide regular webinars that offer SWCA members more insight into the certification program. Each webinar will be hosted online. The webinars will focus on the basic information that you can use to get started (or finish!) your certification application. In addition, facilitators will be prepared to answer questions regarding the application process or your specific questions.

SWCA 2021 Featured Keynote Panel

In lieu of the traditional keynote address, the 2021 Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) virtual conference will feature a keynote panel dedicated to elevating the voices, experiences, and practices of undergraduate and graduate tutors who identify as Black/African American. The SWCA board invites nominations (including self-nominations) for Black/African American-identifying student-tutors to participate as featured panelists for the fully-online 2021 SWCA Conference, “Trauma and Transformation,” to amplify voices often silenced yet most impacted by structural racism. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Talisha Hatiwanger Morrison, who will work with panelists to develop a list of questions that will frame their roundtable discussion.

With Dr. Morrison, panelists will

Title the featured keynote panel.
Develop questions for discussion.
Prepare remarks.

We invite writing center administrators to nominate Black/African American student-tutors to participate on this featured keynote panel. Self-identified Black/African American student-tutors, both undergraduate and graduate, may nominate themselves. Submit nominations here.

Please include the following with your submission:

The nominee’s name, pronouns, email address, home institution, and role
Nomination type (writing center administrator, self-nomination, or other)
Nominator’s name and email address (if not self-nominated)
A150-word rationale for the nomination, including proposed fit or contributions to the panel.

If self-nominated, please include a list of questions or topics the nominee suggests for discussion.

Call for Award Nominations

Nominations for SWCA awards are due by Monday, November 9, 2020.

Nominations and self-nominations are welcome for all award categories: Undergraduate Tutor, Graduate Tutor, Professional Tutor, and SWCA Achievement Awards.

Nominees should be from schools within the SWCA region. For a nominee to be eligible for an award, the nominee, their center’s director, or their institution must be an SWCA member by October 31 of the year in which they are nominated.

SWCA-FL Tutor Collaboration Day 2020 to be Held Online on Nov. 13

This year’s SWCA-Florida Tutor Collaboration Day will take place Friday, November 13th from 9:15 am - 11:30 am. It will be held virtually and is free to attend!

This year’s TCD will bring together tutors, consultants, and writing centers across the state to discuss the challenge of creating change and how we can continue to evolve our centers. There will be eight sessions to choose from lasting 30 minutes each where we discuss some of the larger issues that we face as writing centers such as social justice, diversity, and inclusion. Each session will ask participants to collaborate and generate ideas that they would like to see in their writing centers.

Workshop Description

This workshop will focus on 1) reflecting on our challenges and choices as writing center professionals during this time of crisis and then 2) using those experiences to help create proposals for the upcoming SWCA conference.

This workshop is open to anyone involved with KY Writing Centers to attend -- so, please encourage your undergrad staffers, your grad students, and/or your assistant directors to be part of what I hope will be a thoughtful conversation.

We'll use our time to look carefully at the CFP and then to do some brainstorming about our current and recent work in our respective programs. In the end, participants will have the beginnings of a conference proposal draft.

It is my hope that we can use this time to demystify conference proposal drafting (especially for folks who might feel less than confident about writing center research) and to encourage each other to showcase their efforts at SWCA. Despite my regrets about us not being able to gather in Memphis (one of my favorite cities for food and music!), I think this could potentially be the biggest and most accessible SWCA ever. I'd love to see a record number of KY WC's represented.

Also, thank you to Dr. Rusty Carpenter for hosting this workshop via Zoom and speaking about our spring event focused on SWCA CARE.

Call for Proposals for 2021 SWCA Conference Now Available

Join us online Feb. 11-13, 2021, at the SWCA 2021 Conference to discuss the transformations writing center professionals and the field undertake during times of crisis and trauma. The COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice, social unrest, natural disasters, and significant changes in the structure and leadership of higher education have greatly accelerated the pace of these changes and prompted all of us in the writing center field to reconsider many aspects of our approaches to writing center work and everyday operations. Writing center professionals are called not just to react, but to proactively transform their identities, missions, and services.

We are called to do this transformational work while coping with old and emergent traumas, mentoring and supporting tutors and clients during multiple crises, and seeking to mitigate new realities of higher education. This conference seeks to emphasize the ways trauma creates opportunities for us to transform as a discipline.

The SWCA 2021 conference scheduled to take place in Memphis has officially been postponed to 2022. In Spring 2021, the SWCA board will host a virtual conference so we can still do some valuable work together as an organization. More information to come this Fall.

The SWCA CARE program (Center Acknowledgment & Recognition of Excellence) continues to support the outstanding writing center work taking place throughout our region and beyond—this work is even more important now in these challenging times! To learn more, check out the SWCA CARE webpage.

The SWCA-CARE program will host summer webinars that offer SWCA members more insight into the certification program. Each webinar will be hosted online, via video. The webinars will focus on the basic information that you can use to get started (or finish!) your certification application. In addition, facilitators will be prepared to answer questions you might have regarding the application process or your specific questions. Certified centers are eligible to apply for an innovation grant of $250.

The conference will be held at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville. You can read about the conference in the Call for Proposals.

While we had planned a small fee [$5/tutor; $10/director], we have waived conference fees this year in recognition that this may be a tough financial year for many of us. Lunch will be provided. Proposals can be submitted here and are due July 20 (revised date).
